Our 1969L-1982 C3 Steering Coupler Process Details:
We believe original parts are vital to a correct restoration.
The original parts were production items and were NEVER perfect. All parts sent to us that are in good enough condition to reuse will be cleaned and recommended for use in the Steering Coupler sent back to you. The customer will have an opportunity to review pictures of all parts after dis-assembly and we will tell you our thoughts on what we feel should be replaced. The final decision will be made by the customer as to which parts they want replaced or reused.
There is no additional charge beyond the core charge for any new parts you want replaced rather than reused.
The splined flange, stamped center retainer and capture strap are original GM parts that will be refurbished. The replacement discs are made from all new materials. They are NOT stamped out of the sidewall of an old tire. They are NOT made from a piece of old conveyor belt. They are made from (8) layers of rubber with (7) layers of cloth bonded together into a single unit like the original parts. A correct wire mesh disc is then bonded in the right location to provide the ground for the horn circuit. Our disc has been carefully compared to NOS parts and we believe the finished product is by far the best available at this time.
TESTING:
We test one of every batch of our bonded discs to 50K dynamic rotary reversal cycles. To pass this test, the disc must not delaminate around the periphery or tear at any point.
The (2) rivets are new parts machined from steel and the heads are formed in a press. The rivets have a shoulder and produce a solid metal to metal connection to the gearbox input flange just as the originals do.
The (2) bolts are new parts machined from steel and have a shoulder to provide a solid metal to metal connection to the steering shaft flange just as the originals do. All steel and iron parts have a rust inhibitor applied. The pinch bolts will be supplied if needed. There are NO hardware store grade plain bolts and nuts used in our product. Every effort has been made to replicate the function and look of the original parts.
If there is something you think might help us do a better job, please contact us and let us know. We want your input!
